Chicago (IL) – NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will get a newly developed sunshield protecting the device from harsh solar light.

According to a story reported by The News, Northrop Gunman recently completed a preliminary design review of its sunshield membrane management subsystem for NASA’s JWST. The five layer membrane with the size of a tennis court and the shape of a beach umbrella provides an SPF the equivalent of 1.2 million, Northrop Grumman claims.

“”The sunshield is designed to block solar light and keep the observatory operating at cryogenic temperatures. The [shield] will help enable the Webb Telescope’s infrared sensors to see distant galaxies, early stars and planetary systems, and help astronomers better understand dark matter.” [The News]
