Hard hit phone firm Motorola turned in a loss for its first quarter but has confirmed it will have a range of Android based smartphones which it will distribute through a number of different carriers.

The co-CEO, Sanjay Jha, confirmed the existence of the phones during a conference call. While he didn’t discuss detailed specs of the devices, he did say that they’d be aimed at the high end and middle end of the marketplace.

That means they’re likely to have some funky multimedia and Internet abilities and there could well be more than one model.

Motorola made a net loss of $228 million for the quarter, compared to a loss of $190 million in the same period last year, with sales dropping to $5.37 billion compared to $7.45 billion in the same period last year.

Sequentially, the firm shipped 23 per cent less handsets in its first quarter, amounting to 14.7 million units.

It will continue to shave costs in a bid to return to profitability.
