The market for “glasses-free 3D” technology is still very nascent and hasn’t achieved broad market appeal or scaled manufacturing costs, but Samsung is trying to innovate nonetheless.
Samsung, which also has a huge stage in the glasses-required 3D market and has a higher maket share thn all over 3D TV makers, has juse demoed a new 55-inch display that doesn’t require glasses, according to TrustedReviews.com
It’s not quite a TV because right now all it can display is specifically tailored content and it has no TV connections. But that’s all stuff that could easily be added in. Getting the image to work right is the challenging part.
Glasses-free 3D, also known by its more technical name of autostereoscopic 3D, works by incorporating thousands of tiny mirrors into the display itself, so that images on a flat screen can appear to have depth.
Toshiba is actually already selling glasses-free 3D TVs in Japan, but they are small, around 20 inches, and are extremely expensive.
Here in the US, the Nintendo 3DS is soon set to become the first mass market product to use the technology. Analysts have said it stands a much better chance of success in small, portable displays like the 3DS and LCD screens on 3D cameras.
